Helen Lempriere Travelling Art Scholarship 2008 ($60,000)

Closing date: Friday 27 June 2008

Formerly the NSW Travelling Art Scholarship, this award is offered each year by the Government, with the generous support of the Helen Lempriere Bequest, managed by Perpetual Trustees. The purpose of the scholarship is to enable a visual artist at the beginning of their career to undertake a one to two year program of study or training overseas. This may be through a recognised art institution or participation in short-term workshops or study with a nominated artist.

The scholarship is not intended for established artists.

SUMMARY OF SCHOLARSHIP CONDITIONS

It is intended that the scholarship funds be used towards overseas travel, accommodation, living expenses, course fees and art materials required for the course of study.

Applicants should be within the first five years of their professional practice as an artist and must be resident in New South Wales. (Professional practice, for the purpose of this scholarship, is generally understood to be public presentation of the artist’s work in a professional arts context.)

No work submitted shall have been entered for the Travelling Art Scholarship in any previous year.

No restriction is placed on the size or medium of the artist’s work, but for ease of handling and display it is recommended that work be of manageable dimensions. Very large works may need to be excluded from the associated exhibition due to space restrictions.

APPLICATIONS

Applicants are required to submit:
• a completed Application Form (and a copy of it), including a summary of their qualifications and professional record and an outline of the program of study to be undertaken if the application is successful (acceptance by the institution offering the course of study is not required prior to the application).
• documentation of up to three artworks, completed in accordance with these guidelines (a maximum of 12 images may be submitted). Preferred format for images is on CD-ROM or DVD.

Applicants may also submit supporting documentary material and/or additional images of other artworks, which should be clearly marked ‘Support Material’.

The completed form, a duplicate of the completed form, and support material should be forwarded by Friday 27 June 2008 (close of business) to:
Artspace
The Gunnery
43–51 Cowper Wharf Road
Woolloomooloo NSW 2011

Applicants are advised to read carefully and follow the instructions on the Guidelines and Application Form (available for download on the right side of this page).

They should also read the General Guidelines information in the Fellowships, Scholarships and Residencies section of this website.

ASSESSMENT

The judging committee will make its decision on the basis of both artistic ability and potential, and the suitability of the proposed program of study.

Applications are assessed by a committee appointed by the Minister for the Arts. The criteria for assessment are:
• artistic merit and potential, based on the work submitted and information provided in the application form;
the benefit of the proposed study program to the artist's creative and professional development.

ARTSPACE EXHIBITION

An exhibition of selected works will be held at Artspace, during the latter part of 2008. Applicants selected to exhibit will be notified by telephone or email in August 2008.

ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE WINNER

The winner of the 2008 Helen Lempriere Travelling Art Scholarship will be announced by the Minister for the Arts or his representative at the exhibition’s opening reception in October 2008.
