NSW Writer’s Fellowship 2008 ($20,000)

Closing Date: Friday 20 June 2008

GUIDELINES

The NSW Writer's Fellowship is offered annually by the Government to assist the writing of a new literary work by a writer living in New South Wales.

Applicants are required to demonstrate that their proposal:
•  is likely to result in a work of significant quality
•  will be of demonstrable benefit to their development as a writer
•  will contribute to the advancement of Australian literature.

Applicants are required to submit a completed Application Form (and a copy of it) which outlines:
•  details of the proposal
•  their qualifications and experience
•  evidence of their body of work
as well as:
•  ten pages of published material or, if they have not been previously published, ten single-sided typewritten A4 pages demonstrating their writing ability.

It is desirable that support material (or at least part of it) where possible, should be submitted in the same writing genre as that for which the application is made. Should the writer have already begun the manuscript of the work for which assistance is sought, it is strongly encouraged that a sample of the work be included in the support material submitted.

This support material may be in languages other than English, but it is the responsibility of the applicant to provide a translation of the support material for the purpose of assessment.

The fellowship may be awarded to a novelist, poet, playwright or other writer of fiction or literary non-fiction. It is not intended to assist in:
•  production of books consisting primarily of drawings, photographs or reproductions of paintings
•  compilation of general reference books, bibliographies, how-to books and instruction manuals, personal growth, lifestyle and hobby books, or books aimed primarily at the education market
•  completion of university theses.

The fellowship is not to be used for the purpose of self-publication.

It is expected that the fellowship will be used to supplement the successful applicant's income during work on their nominated project and to defray necessary research and travel costs.

If the project is not already in progress, the successful applicant will be required to commence work on it within 12 months of the presentation of the fellowship. The time for the completion of the project will be negotiated between Arts NSW and the recipient. For the writing of a book or a full-length script, a period of not more than two years from the date of presentation of the fellowship will be considered reasonable.

A final report on work completed during the course of the fellowship will be required within three months of the end of the fellowship period.

Applicants should refer carefully to the General Guidelines information available in the Fellowships, Scholarships and Residencies section of this website.
