GUIDELINES
The biennial NSW Indigenous Arts Fellowship was established in 1996 by the Government in partnership with Sydney City Council to assist an Indigenous artist to further develop their career.
Activities assisted through the fellowship may include further study or training, professional research or the undertaking of a particular arts project. It is expected that the specific proposalput forward by the applicant will result in artistic work of significant quality and be of lasting benefit to the applicant’s professional development.
Applicants are required to submit a completed Application Form (and a copy of it) which outlines:
• details of the proposal
• their qualifications and experience
• samples of work as support material.
The successful recipient will be selected by an independent committee consisting of representatives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities drawing on experience in various artform areas. The committee will make recommendations to the Minister for the Arts.
The selection committee will take account of the following:
• the degree to which the applicant and their project reflect standards of excellence in arts practice
• the applicant’s body of work and experience as a practising professional
• the proposal’s viability – applicants will be required to satisfy the committee that the project, study or training proposal is likely to be completed with the resources available|
• the anticipated benefits of the proposal for New South Wales.
While no restriction is placed on the nature of the proposal for which the fellowship may be granted, it is expected that it will be completed within 18 months of the award being made. The fellowship may be undertaken in Australia or overseas, but the successful applicant will be expected to return to New South Wales and should provide evidence of how the State would benefit from the program.
Applicants are encouraged to discuss proposals with Arts NSW staff before submitting an application.
They should also refer carefully to the General Guidelines available in the Fellowships, Scholarships and Residencies section of this website.
Note: Applicants submitting applications with visual arts and/or public art content are strongly advised to consult the Doing It Our Way – Contemporary Indigenous Cultural Expression in NSW brochure, which includes guidelines and advice on appropriate ways of approaching proposals relating to contemporary Indigenous cultural expression and useful information on intellectual property and copyright issues.
Applicants for the NSW Indigenous Arts Fellowship may also apply for other cultural grants, fellowships or scholarships described on the Arts NSW website.
