Evaluation of Big hART's work at the John Northcott Estate
Big hART is supported by the NSW Government through Arts NSW and the Department of Premier and Cabinet. Between 2002 and 2007 the company ran a landmark project at the Northcott Housing Estate in Surry Hills. The project was facilitated by the Department of Housing and had many public arts outcomes including Sticky Bricks, a theatre production in the 2006 Sydney Festival.
The Northcott project was also designed to deliver community well being and crime prevention outcomes. The social benefits of professional arts work with communities and the evaluation of these outcomes is an increasingly important but, still rather underdeveloped area, in arts reporting. BighART's acquittal to Arts NSW included An Evaluation of Big hART's work at the John Northcott Estate, a report from Murdoch University academics Peter Wright and David Palmer. The report provides a model for evaluating outcomes from this kind of work and is reproduced here with the kind permission of the authors and Big hART.
