On International Museum Day, 18 May 2012,  the Minister for the Arts, the Hon. George Souris, MP, released a downloadable publication, The State Collections: Collections of the State Cultural Institutions of NSW .

The publication describes  the collections of the cultural institutions within the Arts Portfolio  (Art Gallery of NSW, Australian Museum, Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences and the State Library of NSW)  and the Historic Houses Trust of NSW (a statutory authority reporting to the NSW Minister for Heritage).

These collections span the visual arts, design, technology, literature, natural sciences, culture and history and have been built up over the last two centuries, through bequests, donations, revenue generated by the institutions and from Government grants.

The publication complements the extensive online resources of the State’s cultural institutions, which includes digital images of many of the objects in their collections.  These resources can be explored through the websites of the State’s cultural institutions.
