Sydney sisters Dominique and Dan Angeloro, collectively known as Soda_Jerk, have won this year’s prestigious Helen Lempriere Travelling Art Scholarship worth $60,000. The emerging visual artists will use the Scholarship to undertake a one-year program of professional development overseas.

The Helen Lempriere Travelling Art Scholarship is an opportunity for emerging visual artists from NSW to further their career by working with recognised artists or art organisations.

Soda_Jerk is an exciting collaboration between Dominique and Dan Angeloro, focused on developing video installations and performance lectures using audiovisual samples to challenge historical events and cultural trajectories.

The Scholarship will enable Soda_Jerk to undertake a tailored professional development program in the United States and United Kingdom. Soda_Jerk plans to undertake a five month arts residency at Eyebeam in New York City – the leading not-for-profit art and technology centre in the US. It also plans to spend time at Harvard University’s Hip Hop Archive in Boston and embark on a mentorship with Craig Baldwin, one of the most respected artists working in the field of found-footage filmmaking. Soda_Jerk also hopes to undertake an internship with London based artist duo, The Otolith Group.

The Helen Lempriere Travelling Art Scholarship is a substantial prize for emerging contemporary visual artists in Australia. The original Travelling Art Scholarship was established in 1900 when it was awarded to George Lambert. Many notable Australian artists are past recipients of the Scholarship including Roi de Maistre (1923), Sir William Dobell (1929), Bronwyn Oliver (1981) and Peter Atkins (1985).

Soda_Jerk was selected from 12 finalists by an independent panel of judges made up of director Kathleen von Witt (Hawkesbury Regional Gallery and Museum), senior curator Dr Daniel Mudie Cunningham (Artbank), artist and former Scholarship winner Todd McMillan, and curator and writer Jeff Khan (Performance Space).

An exhibition of all the 2011 Helen Lempriere Travelling Art Scholarship finalists’ work is open at Artspace in Woolloomooloo from 7 to 23 October 2011.

The Helen Lempriere Travelling Art Scholarship, as it has been known since 1997, is presented by the NSW Government through Arts NSW with the support of the Helen Lempriere Bequest, managed by Perpetual, and the assistance of Artspace Visual Arts Centre.
