Australia Council published the profile of Australia’s cultural policies that makes a timely contribution to the current discussions prompted by the Australian Government’s proposal to release a cultural policy. Main sections included in the report are:

A report for Arts Council England: Supporting growth in the arts economy

Within the series of three papers: ‘The arts economy’, ‘Place infrastructure and digital’ and ‘Towards an arts and creative economy’, Tom Fleming and Andrew Erskine illustrate synergies between the arts and the creative economy and discuss suggestions for the Arts Council’s approach. The report is introduced by Alan Davey, Chief Executive, Arts Council England and Ed Vaizey MP, Minister for Culture, Communications and Creative industries, Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

Access to Finance for Creative Industry Businesses

DCMS and the Department for Business Innovation & Skills (BIS) published the findings of a jointly commissioned research project to examine whether creative industry businesses face greater difficulties accessing finance compared to SMEs in other sectors. The research uses a mix of statistical analysis of existing survey datasets and newly conducted interviews with SMEs and finance providers.

Reinvesting in Arts Education – Winning America’s Future Through Creative Schools

The President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities (PCAH) released the report Reinvesting in Arts Education: Winning America’s Future Through Creative Schools.  The culmination of 18 months of research, meetings with stakeholders, and site visits all over the country, this report represents an in-depth review of the current condition of arts education, including an update of the current research base about arts education outcomes, and an analysis of the challenges and opportunities in the field that have emerged over the past decade. It also includes a set of recommendations to federal, state and local policymakers.

Economic contribution of the venue-based live music industry in Australia

2011 – The study was commissioned by APRA|AMCOS in conjunction with the Australia Council for the Arts, Arts Victoria, Arts NSW and Live Performance Australia.
The study examined the value of live music from a venue’s perspective and the figures demonstrate the industry’s significant contribution to the Australian economy. This, the first ever national study of the value of live music, has found that in 2009/10 the Australian live music industry injected $1.21 billion into the national economy, with total profits and wages of $652 million and supporting almost 15,000 full-time jobs. The industry also attracts strong audiences with the report finding that 41.97 million patrons attended 328,000 venue-based live music performances at 3,904 venues across Australia in 2009/10.

The 2010 Report of the LPA Ticket Attendance and Revenue Survey

Live Performance Australia (LPA) published the 2010 Report of the LPA Ticket Attendance and Revenue Survey that confirms that engagement with the live performance sector remains strong, although some industry sectors fared better than others. Overall, revenue grew 22.6% to $1.3 billion, while attendances grew 13.5% to 17.2 million paid and unpaid ticket

More than bums on seats: Australian participation in the arts

This research will help arts organisations to better understand their audiences and make their art even more accessible. For policy makers, this study identifies the key factors which will impact Australians’ future participation in the arts. It also identifies barriers and incentives which impact participation.

Much of the findings reported in ‘More than bums on seats: Australian Participation in the Arts’ were based on national data. Arts NSW were keen to explore how the findings for NSW compared to the national results. They approached instinct and reason to reproduce the tables from the Australia Council for the Arts report specifically for NSW residents.
